ADELAIDE (Australia) (Sputnik) – The heads of space agencies of Russia and the United States agreed on the creation of a new space station dubbed Deep Space Gateway on the orbit of the Moon, Russia’s Roscosmos state space corporation Director General Igor Komarov said Wednesday.
He said that China, India and other countries of the BRICS may also take part in the project.
“We have agreed that we will jointly participate in the creation of a new international circumlunar station, Deep Space Gateway. In the first stage we will build the orbital part with the prospect of further application of proven technologies on the surface of the Moon and later on Mars. The drop of the first modules is possible in 2024-2026,”
Komarov told reporters at International Astronautical Congress in Australia.
He added that Russia’s federal space program for 2016-2025 may be reviewed after 2020 in connection with Russia’s participation in the project of a space station construction.
“When we were approving the federal space program, we said that it may be revised in 2020,”
Komarov added.
