HELSINKI (Sputnik) – Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson may hold a meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session in New York, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said Tuesday.

“We held this meeting [with US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Thomas Shannon] as a link within the preparation of the meeting at the level of the minister and the secretary of state. It was taken as a baseline to their meeting during the high-level segment of the UN General Assembly session in New York,”

the Russian diplomat told journalists after the talks with his US counterpart.

The high-level segment of the UN General Assembly session will start next week.

Ryabkov also expressed hope that Lavrov and Tillerson would send the international community a “positive signal” on the possibility of solving “at least some of the existing problems” after the meeting.
