July 3 was a big day for Daniil Medvedev, ranked 49 in the world, who impressed at Eastbourne last week, as he grabbed his first Slam win:
“If somebody told me that I would win on Centre Court, not only play but win, I would say you were joking. So I’m very happy.”
Wawrinka, winner of all previous Grand Slams, never made it past the quarter-final at SW19, crashed to a 6-4 3-6 6-4 6-1 defeat.
The Swiss, 32, seemed rather uncomfortable against his 21-year-old rival from Moscow who laid down ten aces to triumph in 2 hours 13 minutes.
After winning, the young Russian star kissed the Centre Court turf and said:
“It’s my first Grand Slam win, at Wimbledon, my favourite tournament, so I had to kiss the grass. Normally people do it when they win the Slam – I did it when I won my first Slam match!”
