Sputnik – “Only in 2017, 68 terrorism-related crimes were prevented at the preparation stage, including 25 terror acts in public places and critically important buildings,” Alexei Kovalyov said during an counterterrorism forum in the Russian city of Krasnoyarsk.
Moreover, the activities of over 50 secret terror cells were thwarted, and over 80 individuals, who were radicalized by international terror groups and planned to join military actions on the side of extremists abroad, were prohibited from leaving Russia, the official added.
The formation of 44 religious cells in Russian penitentiary facilities was prevented, as were over 90 attempts to transfer various extremist materials to inmates, Kovalyov pointed out.
The authorities convinced 1,300 individuals to refuse to commit offenses, the official noted, adding that this number was higher than the number of such individuals recorded in 2016. Of them, 58 abandoned their plans to carry out terrorist activities, a 150-percent increase from 2016.
The content of over 60,000 online resources was blocked, which is almost twice more than in 2016, and access to over 1,500 websites was limited. The activities of 68 extremist resources operated from abroad were thwarted.
According to Russian Federal Security Service head Alexander Bortnikov, in 2016, the authorities thwarted 42 terrorist attacks being prepared on Russian soil.
