MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Combat planes from the Russian air group in Syria destroyed a number of Islamic State (terrorist group banned in Russia) targets near the besieged city of Deir ez-Zor in past 24 hours, including four tanks and two fortified artillery positions, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Monday.
“During the night and today, the Russian aviation continued to successfully attack the Islamic State targets, destroying 4 tanks, 16 all-terrain vehicles armed with heavy machine guns, 6 heavy vehicles with ammunition, and 2 fortified artillery positions,”
the ministry said in a statement.
“Effective actions of the Russian aircraft allowed the Syrian government troops under the command of Gen. Hassan Sukhel to continue the offensive along the eastern bank of the Euphrates River to Deir ez-Zor with the goal to lift its siege,”
the statement said.
