MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Russian agrarians will gather a record grain harvest this year, more than in the history of the Soviet Union, where the record was 127 million tonnes, Russian Agriculture Minister Alexander Tkachev said at a government meeting Thursday.
“The Agriculture Ministry was cautious in estimating the final gross yield due to unfavorable weather conditions in a number of regions, but today 85 percent of the cultivated area has been harvested and almost 122 million tonnes of grain in the bunker weight has been ground, and we can confidently say that a record harvest will be collected, probably in the entire history of Russia and, of course, the Soviet Union,”
Tkachev said.
“I want to remind you that we had a similar harvest in 1978 – 127 million tonnes, but this year we will beat this record, I do not doubt it,”
he said.
Tkachev said Russia expected to export 45 million tonnes of grain in 2017.
