Lukashenko offers to organize meeting of Pope Francis and Patriarch Kirill

Lukashenko promises Belarus would do everything in its power to make the meeting truly historic.

MINSK (Sputnik) – Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko on Thursday, at a meeting with participants of the plenary session of the Council of the Bishops’ Conferences of Europe (CCEE), offered to organize a meeting of Pope Francis, the leader of the Catholic Church, and Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Kirill in Minsk.

The Pope and the Russian Patriarch held a historic meeting in Cuba in February 2016, and a joint statement was issued as a result.

“We talked about the results of the meeting between the Pope and Patriarch Kirill, which took place somewhere far away, in Cuba. I think we should consider their meeting here, in Minsk. This is the place where the problems of the West and the East, the North and the South can be discussed,”

Lukashenko said, as quoted by Belta news agency.

Lukashenko added that if the heads of the two Churches supported the idea, Belarus would do everything in its power to make the meeting truly historic.
