MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed with his South Korean counterpart Moon Jae-in the problems of the Korean Peninsula, taking into account the new nuclear test by North Korea, and both leaders strongly condemned Pyongyang’s actions, the Kremlin’s press service said in a statement Monday.

“Russian President Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation with the President of the Republic of Korea Moon Jae-in on September 4,”

the statement said.

“When discussing the problems of the Korean Peninsula with account for the new nuclear test conducted by the DPRK on September 3, the leaders strongly condemned Pyongyang’s actions grossly violating the relevant UN Security Council resolutions, undermining the regime of global non-proliferation and posing a serious threat to peace and security in the region,”

it said.

Putin told Moon Jae-in that settlement of the difficult situation on the Korean Peninsula was only possible through the resumption of talks and active use of political and diplomatic means.

The Kremlin also said Putin and the South Korean leader would continue to discuss the situation on the Korean Peninsula on September 6 at the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) in the Russian Far Eastern city of Vladivostok.
